Allan McClure �Mick� Johnson, age 82, died Wednesday, January 14, 2004 at his home in Kanab, Utah. Born April 3, 1921 in Richfield, Utah to Inez McClure and Allan D. Johnson. Married Valda Henrie on May 27, 1942 in Galveston, Texas, later solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple.
Allan joined the U.S. Marine Corp as a fighter pilot during World War II. He served in the Guadalcanal campaign in the Pacific Theater flying the Grumman F-4F Wildcat. He later transitioned to the F-4U Corsair. After World War II, he joined the Utah Air National Guard, and flew the P-51 Mustang.
Allan graduated from Brigham Young High School in Provo before the war, and graduated with a five year Engineering Degree from BYU in 1956. He worked for General Electric from 1956-58, helping develop the first afterburners for jet engines. He then worked for Marquardt from 1958 until retirement. While there he did high pressure research that included development of artificial diamonds, development of a portable kidney dialysis machine, and did research on the problem of desalinization. His last work was with his son Allan Jr. at Allan M. Johnson & Associates doing environmental engineering.
Allan was a member of the LDS church, and served in many callings, including with the Boy Scouts.
Survivors include wife Valda Henrie Johnson of Kanab, Utah; nine children Allan Jr. (Diane) of Harbor City, CA, James (Marilyn) of Reseda, CA, Jerald (Malissa) of Plymouth, UT, Val (Gloria) of Ogden, UT, Elizabeth (Jason) Bock of Brea, CA, Dan (Jean) of Vacaville, CA, Katherine (Scott) Christensen of Las Vegas, NV, Patricia (Vincent) Cioffi of Castaic, CA, and Barbara (Russell) Bennett of Tooele, UT; sisters Travis (Fred) Jackman of Orem, UT, and Virginia Washburn of Orem, UT; brother Thad (Marla) Johnson of Orem, UT; brother-in-law Gill Jensen of Orem, UT; 34 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Adele Jensen, and brother-in-law Paul Washburn.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, January 17, 2004 in the Kanab Kaibab LDS Stake Center. Burial was in the Kanab Cemetery under the direction of Mosdell Mortuary.
