When I married JB I had no idea I was marrying into a family of bathroom readers.
Before I married him, I was perfectly content to take care of business without ever reading a single word. But, in marriage, people change, and let’s just say that I’ve done most of the changing in this realm. I had no idea how much the 3rd generation of Jones readers would be affected by this until yesterday.
. .
I took the kids to the library on Friday afternoon. We came home
with 3 bags full of books for Allie to choose from. I knew she would spend most of the weekend with her nose stuck in a book – her nickname around here is Belle (as in Beauty and the Beast). It seems that Allie has picked up on the perks of bathroom reading from her parents – quiet, undisturbed, alone time. Okay, she’s picked this up from observing her dad, the alone time doesn’t quite apply to mom.
Anyway, she has been known to take a book into the bathroom with her and emerge when the current chapter is finished. So, yesterday,
she went into the bathroom with a good book and just a couple of minutes later, she was urgently yelling for help. I ran
downstairs thinking I was being summoned to kill yet another ant. As I surveyed the bathroom she informed me that she was so busy reading her book that she failed to notice the toilet lid was still down and her pants were not, until she
felt something warm and wet down her leg. Luckily, she has developed a good sense of humor and has allowed us to tease her just a
little. In fact, she has found it quite funny that she couldn’t stop reading long enough to go to the bathroom correctly!
Enough bathroom talk. Allie has also developed a quick wit
lately. A couple of weeks ago JB was joking with the girls about
how he’ll show embarrassing videos to boys they bring home, especially
any boys they like (JB and I still have to chat about why he decided to
bring up this topic in the first place). Allie’s very quick
response to him was “Why dad, don’t you want grandchildren?”
The other kids are doing well too. Camryn is really enjoying school,
we’re just trying to keep her humble. She makes us laugh a
lot. She has had a fascination lately with my relationship with
JB. She reminds us all the time that we’re in love and she knows
it because we married each other. I like thinking of it that
way.
Seth is such a fun little boy. He spends most of his
time in the car identifying different colored Jeeps on the road.
He doesn’t know all his letters but he can spot a crane, cherry-picker
or backhoe a mile away and can name any vehicle on a construction
site.
Rachel is so cute. It is so fun to watch her watching
her siblings. She actually gets excited when Seth comes around,
even though he’s usually rolling over her, pulling her socks off or
taking a toy away from her. But, she’s a good sport and she’s
learning how to give just as good as she gets.
JB is really busy preparing for his oral exams in May/June. So, we really cherish
our nightly walks to the mailbox. We’re looking forward to his
exams because it means we’re much closer to our trip to California and
to seeing our family!

I still do that, only I remember to lift up the toilet seat.
