Katherine and Corey arrived in Baltimore on Sunday and we’ve been on the go ever since. On Sunday we visited Arlington National Cemetery. Lisa stopped on her way through to North Carolina so we all got to go together We watched the changing of the guard at the Tomb of Unknown Soldiers. It’s a very solemn and awesome ceremony. Did you know that after the cemetery closes the area around the tomb becomes a restricted military post? At the end of the ceremony we were firmly asked to leave the premises. We came back home for some apple pie and lots of talking.

On Monday we headed into Washington D.C. to see the sights. There is so much to see that we only made it to one Smithsonian museum – the Museum of American History. Camryn and Allie’s favorite part was seeing Dorothy’s red slippers from the Wizard of Oz. Corey’s favorite part was seeing Babe Ruth’s baseball. Katherine really liked seeing the First Lady’s exhibit. Seth liked the cars, of course. Because there is so much to see, and because it was really starting to rain hard, we drove by the Washington Monument and the Lincoln Memorial. We did manage to walk up to the gate in front of the huge south lawn of the White House – the pictures turned out great!
Today we went to Mount Vernon – the home of George and Martha Washington. My favorite part was seeing the key to the Bastille given to George Washington by the Marquis de Lafayette. I could go on with lots of trivia but you’ll just have to ask Katherine and Corey when they get homeor visit mountvernon.org. The drive down the George Washington Memorial Parkway, which winds along the Potomac River, is beautiful. The parkway takes you through Alexandria, Virginia and ends right at Mount Vernon. JB and Allie both went to school today so tomorrow we’re all going together to Hershey, PA. No one can pass up free chocolate!!!!!!
